A Monette landmark since 1946

A library built by community.

Monette's public-library story predates the current Kohn Memorial Library building. After a 1944 fire damaged the earlier collection, local supporters and the Kohn family helped make a permanent library possible.

Named for Arthur and Belle Kohn, the library reflects a long Monette tradition of neighbors investing in literacy, opportunity, and shared community spaces.
1940

Monette joins the county library

Monette Library became a branch of the Craighead County Library and was housed in the American Legion Hall.

1944

A devastating fire

A fire at the American Legion Hall destroyed or badly damaged most of the library's books.

1946

Kohn Memorial Library opens

The new library opened in memory of Arthur and Belle Kohn, longtime Monette dry-goods merchants, with strong support from the community and Kohn family.

1996

Renovation and expansion

The library reopened following renovation and expansion, growing to approximately 2,000 square feet.
